Where to Eat Stone Crab: Florida’s Gulf Coast Delicacy

When you’re vacationing in Florida, it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll want to try some fresh seafood. Many local restaurants feature fresh catches of all kinds, giving you plenty of options suitable for any palate. One popular dish at the seafood restaurants near Lely Resort is stone crab, a delicacy that is simply unmatched.

Introduction

Stone crabs are an incredible selection drawing visitors from near and far. These sea creatures can be found in the area from October through May. When you’re staying in Lely, you’re in the perfect spot for the best catches; just south of Lely is Everglades City, also known as the “Stone Crab Capital of the World!”

Stone crabs actually became a common dish because local fishermen kept catching these creatures instead of the mullet and pompano they were aiming for. Half of their body weight is found in their massive claws, which are the only parts of the animal that are harvested. Once the claw is removed, the crab itself is placed back into the water, where it grows a new claw! These magnificent creatures are worth looking out for on the menu when you’re in town.
